Amid growing global emphasis on environmentally responsible production, the Government of India has rolled out a series of initiatives to accelerate the adoption of green technologies in the textile sector. The measures are aimed at enhancing industry competitiveness, expanding export opportunities and reinforcing long-term sustainability.

ESG Task Force to Drive Sustainable Practices

As part of its strategy, the government has set up an Environment, Social and Governance (ESG) Task Force to guide industry transition towards responsible manufacturing. The platform facilitates policy dialogue, promotes certification standards and encourages adoption of best practices.

Through programmes such as Circular Samvaad and the Cluster Exchange Mechanism, the Task Force is enabling knowledge-sharing across industry stakeholders and supporting the shift towards environmentally compliant production systems.

Focus on Energy and Resource Efficiency

Efforts to improve operational efficiency have been supported under the Amended Technology

Upgradation Fund Scheme (ATUFS), through which more than 1,100 energy-efficient machines have been deployed across textile units. These upgrades

have contributed to reduced energy consumption

and improved water usage. In parallel, the Integrated Processing Development Scheme (IPDS) has led to the establishment of multiple Common Effluent Treatment Plants incorporating Zero Liquid Discharge (ZLD)technology, aimed at minimising industrial waste water impact.

Pilot Projects Promote Cleaner Production

To encourage sustainable manufacturing at the grassroots level, several pilot initiatives have been introduced across key textile clusters. These projects focus on reducing hazardous chemical usage,

promoting eco-friendly materials, improving waste management and encouraging life-cycle assessment practices. One major initiative targeting textile processing units across multiple clusters aims to significantly lower carbon emissions and reduce chemical consumption, while building awareness on sustainable production techniques.

Strengthening Innovation Through R&D

The National Technical Textiles Mission continues to support research and development in advanced and sustainable materials. Approved projects under the mission are focused on developing eco-friendly technologies that can be scaled across the textile value chain.

Tex-Eco Initiative to Shape Future Growth

Looking ahead, the Union Budget 2026–27 has introduced an Integrated Programme for the textile sector, which includes the Tex-Eco initiative. This programme is designed to promote globally competitive, environmentally sustainable textile and apparel manufacturing. Future Roadmap

With increasing global scrutiny on environmental standards, India’s push towards sustainable textiles is expected to enhance its credibility in international markets. By combining policy support, technology adoption and industry collaboration, the sector is positioning itself for greener and more resilient growth.
